CROPSEY COMMUNITY FARM

Rockland County's Art in Public Places Committee seeks an artist for a public art project at the CROPSEY COMMUNITY FARM in New City, New York.
CROPSEY COMMUNITY FARM AND BARN - RECENT HISTORY:
The Rockland Farm Alliance (RFA) was formed in 2007 by dedicated members of the community. In an unprecedented partnership with the county and the Town of Clarkstown, RFA received the license to revive the historic Cropsey Farm in New City, transforming it into an organic, community learning farm and CSA.
The restoration of the 1796 New World Dutch Barn was completed in November of 2019. The structure has been listed on the National Registry of Historic Places since 2017. The Cropsey barn is a true jewel in the heart of Rockland County and the Town of Clarkstown; a glimpse into a period of time that’s long gone.
The mission of the Rockland Farm Alliance is to promote sustainable agriculture in Rockland County by protecting and revitalizing farmland. RFA's projects demonstrate local sustainable food production and provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn about sustainable farming practices. ​
PROJECT GOALS AND CONSIDERATIONS​:
The purpose of the project is to enhance the setting, understanding and appreciation of the historic farm and barn. The single or multiple part artwork commissioned for this project will enliven and enhance the experience of visitors to the farm and the various programs.
Sensitivity should be given to the visual impact of the art submission in relation to the barn and the surrounding environment. Durability of materials and their resistance to weather and maintenance requirements should be a consideration.
Note: The interior and exterior of the barn structure itself cannot be used for this project.
SITE LOCATION:
The farm is located at 220 South Little Tor Road, New City, NY. Most of the uncultivated farm property could be considered for the art installation with the exception of the private Cropsey house parcel and the barn structure. The CSA and barn area are considered to be the focus of visitor activities.

ELIGIBILITY:
Artists from New York City, Bergen, Rockland, Orange, Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess Counties are eligible to apply.

BUDGET:
The project budget is ​$10,750​. This includes all associated expenses and fees. The artist chosen will be responsible for transporting and installing their work at the site.

HOW TO APPLY:
Your proposal should include:
1) a concept illustration
2) a written description that includes the thematic relevance
3) a written description of the materials to be used and their ability to withstand the four season environment of Rockland County.
4) up to five Images of previous work​. Files should be titled with the last name of the artist, the date and the title of the piece, dimensions, media or materials and, if sold, the price at the sale.
5) your CV​ with your full name, address, home / cell phone, email, and website URL (if you have one).
Note: Submission must be emailed​ in pdf and /or jpg format. No hard copy portfolios and/or letters should be submitted.
​SELECTION:
The selection committee will consider the quality of the design, relevance of the installation to the farm in theme, scale and / or materials.
Finalists will be selected after a review of the site specific proposal. Finalists will be asked to further develop their proposal after which a visual presentation to the selection committee will be made.
